"don't crash into vehicles with flashing lights" should be relatively low on the list of profoundly challenging technical problems on the path to autonomous driving, as well as a pretty common-sense place for NHTSA to draw a line between defective and functional systems... and yet!

auto safety regulation in this country is so fundamentally broken that NHTSA is still investigating whether or not Tesla's remedy for that recall which emerged from its shocking string of emergency vehicle crashes was effective... which this latest crash seems to suggest it probably isn't!
