I once got banned from an online community for pointing out that poor people in the United States do not starve to death outside of mental illness or voluntary decision-making but that is the case.

Right, an important factor here is that virtually every American *can* spend less on food because among other things food pantries will give you essentially infinite eg rice/beans (and in fact, we often turn them down because even people who go there for support don't really want it).

I think there are still shared norms we can appeal to when we talk to the marginal MAGA voter. But there really are no shared norms left with the core of the movement.

But if your kids do labor or chores, they're helpful. If they raise your other kids it's a load off. If they walk to the corner store to get your cigarettes. If they take off on their bikes half the day to go who knows where.

This is basically a policy choice but the biggest policy choice ( 🔥 take) is translating unreasonable cultural expectations for child reading into legally mandated high standards for child rearing, which scares a lot of people off.

Fundamentally I don't actually think that people are as efficient with dollars as institutions would be efficient in making services more affordable or free. For some reason we're supposed to think that this isn't true, but I've never seen compelling evidence.
