The temperature has been dropping slowly all day - now 50F with a freeze expected tomorrow morning. Glad I caught this Downy Woodpecker before the cold arrived. I like the way his left foot is balancing on the rim. #birds 🪶

This gift amaryllis/Hippeastrum from my son and daughter-in-law reached peak bloom just in time for New Year's Eve. It's always fun to watch them develop and bloom. #gardening 🌱I'm taking it as a sign of hope for 2025.

Lovely! I miss mine! Had 2 shrubs and they were enormous. If I ever saw a mutabilis for sale somewhere I'd probably have to take a chance and try again.

The potted vines seemed to be okay at the base so I cut off all the damaged parts and took the remnants into the garage for winter - worth a try, anyway!

I expected the overnight low of 38F would knock off the Blue Butterfly Clerodendron but it was still blooming away this afternoon. Its botanical name is Rotheca myricoides, it comes from Africa and dies to the ground every winter. A passalong plant from a dear friend. #gardening 🌱

My camera is broken so this is just a phone video but this titmouse was so cute I had to film it. I think it's a Black crested but may be a hybrid Black crested/ Tufted titmouse. #birds

Right now there are good berries in my yard (Yaupon Holly/Ilex vomitoria) and bad invasive berries on the other side of the fence (Chinaberry/ Melia azedarach). I don't think the #birds care - they eat everything. #gardening 🌱

This Osmanthus fragrans shrub is not showy at all but it provides cover for birds visiting the stone birdbath and at this time of year it has multiple tiny flowers, each wafting fragrance, earning the name Sweet Olive. #FlowerReport #Gardening 🌱

It's still way too dry here, but an inch of rain last week was enough to pop some blooms on the Tagetes lucida AKA Mexican Mint Marigold AKA Mexican tarragon. The leaves have a wonderful scent and can be used as herbs in cooking. #FlowerReport #gardening 🌱

I've seen a few tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglets off-and-on this week but they're so jumpy and twitchy! Video catches them better than still photos, so here a couple of video frames. #birds #birdscrolling 🪶
