Here is the whole story from wikipedia. TLDR: The gentleman depicted is standing up to say something unpopular at a town meeting and getting a respectful hearing. Meeting was in Arlington Vt. Was an open town meeting so any resident could attend and speak. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom...

To be clear, the Town Meeting depicted here is in Arlington VT but it still resonates.

I am trying really hard not to bore you with the story of this painting. As a Town Meeting Member in Arlington MA its very dear to my heart.

This is why I went to the Yale School of Drama. Because every once in a while a play changes the world.

I am an expert at budget construction and understanding finance. I am really good at seeing the values underlying a budget. Also make great pies including scratch crust and I am pretty handy with construction tools. I have no doubts about these things. I am told that I am empathetic. I doubt that.

technically it’s a town meeting warrant but it would be nicer if he was there to share his mom’s ice cream recipe

Who made that rule? It’s been hard for 40 years and I don’t think it’s going to change.

I am a purist. I think you can only use this pic to illustrate debates about tax increases. Oh, and I don’t really care what color mint chocolate chip ice cream is as long as it’s available.
