A few end of the year birds spotted on 12/31/23. This Barred Owl was just out on this branch that was arched over the path. What a treat! And I’m not sure how I managed that extreme focus on the Hermit Thrush- but I like the outcome.

I participated in my first Christmas Bird Counts (highly recommended!) this year and actually spotted a Chuck’s Will Widow! Such a thrilling lifer and amazing bird. I was so excited when I saw it that I barely could get the words out to tell the group. 🥹🪶

Technically not a great photo but I’m pretty smitten with this shot I took of a Ruby throated hummingbird today during a CBC. There was also a Rufous/Allen’s present and they seemed to be having a little territorial beef over the gorgeous Turks cap🪶

Loving these vintage holiday greetings that are popping up on the interwebs. This is a gathering I’d 100% like to be part of. Crescent moon, owls, wine- count me in. 🦉🥂🪶

Birds always seem a little bigger way up in the trees, seeing them down on the ground foraging really shows their tiny but mighty size. Pine Warbler, White-throated Sparrow, Ruby-Crowned Kinglet, Orange/Crowned Warbler 🪶

Sunday afternoon went birding with a friend in South Louisiana. As the sun was setting we noticed a large amount of Scissor-tailed Flycatchers. A careful 1x1 count and got us 53! As we were leaving they started to roost in the Oak trees. Quite a sight just an hour south of New Orleans!

Some faves from last weekend when I did my first attempt at a big day. 🪶It was fun but chill. Saw 64 species. Juvenile Black-crowned night heron, downy woodpecker in eclipse light, common yellowthroat, immature white ibis 🪶
