Joyce Carol Oates can write brilliantly about anything (and does). 'Zombie' is that quiet dude that lives down the block. You think he's weird. You have no idea. I won't say I enjoyed 'Zombie' but it took me places. Not good places, but places. Do your thang, JCO. 🙌🖤 #horrorfan #darkfiction 📚😱📚💙

Here's another feel-good ray of sunshine read.

‘The Willows’ by Algernon Blackwood. A classic short story deserving of its reputation. The gloomy atmosphere and creeping dread warms my dark little heart. Absolutely loved it. 🖤🖤🖤🖤💙📚 #shortstories #classichorror #darkfiction #algernonblackwood #legend

I won a free copy of Tāme Wairere Iti’s memoir, MANA, from the ReadingRoom. Absolutely stoked (and thankful) to receive this work of a lifetime. ❤️You can read my entry in the ReadingRoom newsletter. 💙📚🇳🇿 #activism #firstpeoples #maori #tameiti #memior newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/31/t...

Dark greetings. My son is a math major at Uni and going to a monster party as one of the worst historical representatives in his field. 🎃 #halloween #modernmonsters #twoleggedmonsters

RED WIND WARNING for heaps of New Zealand today. Well over 100k winds kicking off in Wellington. The city is shutdown. We’ve got the cat duct-taped to the wall so she doesn’t get whisked away. Don’t even bother changing out of your jammies. Today most assuredly blows. #weathernz #tharsheblows

Like your folk horror with heaps of dirty old hippies? Then Adam L. G. Nevill’s “The Reddening” has got you covered (in scarlet). I listened to an audio version with one minor quibble - it sounded like an American doing the narration. Not ideal for an English folk horror. 💙📚😱🖤👹

As the bought-and-sold continue to give zero f*cks about future generations, Tim Winton’s cli-fi novel JUICE reads more like grim prophecy. Great book though. Happy to have a hardback. 📚💙😱🚀 #scifi #climatecrisis

My son and I watched ROLLERBALL last night. He dug the 70s dystopian vibes (and retrofuturism fashion) and the themes of distraction and control. We discussed Corporate Society and how the game was used in the film, and how the great distraction now is digital. Siri, play Toccata in D minor. 🎥💙🚀

Finished “The End Of The World As We Know It” and want to do two things immediately (see image). I’ll return to this anthology for many rereads. And Wayne Brady… can’t be that Wayne Brady? Laws yes. 🖤💙📚😱 #constantreader #shortstories #darkfiction @briankeene.bsky.social @cgolden.bsky.social

When we lived in Big Island Hawaii, my Kiwi partner settled for Vegemite, but once we moved to her homeland, it was Marmite all day all night. 🖤 #beingkiwi #aotearoa 🇳🇿 #breakfast

Never been much of a sports follower. Didn't get it. Then I married a Kiwi. Then I moved to Aotearoa. Then my wife indoctrinated me: All Blacks. Black Ferns. Bleed black. The Ferns earned a bronze at the recent World Cup, but damn, the power, heart, and grace of these warrior women. 🖤🖤🖤

@bevvincent.bsky.social Lifelong constant reader. My family can't buy me King books because they never know what I've read and what I haven't. Santa brought me your book last Christmas. Thanks for the hard work of putting it together. I enjoy leaving it on the coffee table for visitors to peruse. 🖤

I’m reading “Swan Song” on my Kindle, listening to “Wayward” on Libby, and am almost finished with “The End of the World As We Know It” as my bedside book. Plus there’s frickin’ Cheetolini the Dolt raving at the UN. Living the Nightmare! Yeah! 🖤 💙📚😱@chuckwendig.bsky.social @briankeene.bsky.social

Garage Sale Guilty Pleasure: Do I need another copy of Stephen King’s first novel ‘Carrie’?
No.
Am I going to buy this 1978, movie tie-in, beat-to-hell, pocket paperback of ‘Carrie’?
Yes.
Or course.
The darkness compels me.

The Demon whispered in my ear, 'You are not strong enough to withstand the storm.'
I whispered back, 'I am the storm, brother... now, do you have any salami or mustard?'

I thought I'd take a break from dark fiction and read a non-fiction book as light palate cleanser. A momentary step away from the shadows. Perhaps a nice travelogue?

Hmm... camping on an ice flow. Not a fan. (great book) 🖤💙📚

Why there aren't computers/robots in Frank Herbert's DUNE. “Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.” But our techbros would never let this happen, right?💙🚀 #ArtificialSuperintelligence

Page 290, “The End Of The World As We Know It” - “He wasn’t made for what the world was now. Haunted. Streaked with blood and bile. A smear over the map of what was once alive, vibrant – beautiful. This god-awful state. It just felt fucking endless.” 💙📚🖤😱 Alex Segura, ‘La Mala Hora’. #darkfiction
