It may be that there’s a sense among some in philosophy that that ‘flashy’ self-promotion (e.g., a sleek website) indicates weakness of the work itself. (‘Can’t the material speak for itself?’)

It’s an unfortunate attitude, if real: a nice site should be a sign of ability to professionalize.
