How does sand mining reshape rivers?

@drchrishackney.bsky.social explores how #sandmining is transforming riverbeds in the #MekongRiver, #Cambodia. His work shows that bedforms become larger, steeper, and rougher than natural ones, altering flow and #sediment dynamics!

What is the ASN? How did it begin? And what are we doing?

Our founder and leader, Dr Catherine Russell, opened the first #Anthropocene #Sediment #Network conference in June 2025.

We’re excited for this #interdisciplinary space for understanding materials and their motion on a human-shaped #Earth!

Update! ⛱️

The beach is being artificially replenished! While natural processes will help restore it over time, this intervention gives it a much-needed boost.

A reminder that beaches are dynamic landscapes, constantly shaped by both nature and human action. 🌊🏖️

Sediment is always in motion. The sand hasn’t disappeared, it’s just moved to sandbars offshore. Over time, waves and currents will naturally replenish the #beaches, restoring the #coastline.

🌊 This process is normal, but because we are used to the crisp lines on #maps, it can feel unsettling.

Cyclone #Alfred 🌀 caused severe beach erosion in #Queensland, shifting vast amounts of sand offshore and exposing soft #sediment cliffs. 🌊
This dramatic change can feel shocking, but it’s actually part of a fascinating and ongoing sediment cycle…

From pollution to infrastructure, from river deltas to demolition waste, sediment records our impact on the planet. That’s why we need broader discussions, bigger collaborations, and new ways of thinking.

Sediment isn’t just rock, soil, or sand—it’s what we wear, what you are reading this on, and the materials that shape our landscapes, cities, and historical records. But today, it doesn’t just move according to physics; it moves because of everything we do.

Sediment connects all of us 🌍

The ASN brings together perspectives from the physical and humanities disciplines to develop educational material and #research solutions to understand the dynamic life of #anthropogenic #sediment.
