In December 1983, Jackson traveled to Syria and secured the release of Navy pilot Lt. Robert Goodman, who had been shot down over Lebanon. He negotiated the release of American hostages on three other occasions, despite facing initial criticism from presidential administrations. /7

Jesse Jackson ran for the Democratic presidential nomination twice, in 1984 and 1988, mobilizing a “Rainbow Coalition” of minority groups, progressives and low-income voters. He was unsuccessful but his campaigns were instrumental in increasing minority voter registration and engagement. /6

In the mid-1980s, Jackson formed the National Rainbow Coalition, bringing together diverse groups to advocate for human rights. The Rainbow Coalition later merged with PUSH to become the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. It continues to operate as a multi-racial, multi-issue civil rights organization. /5

Jackson became national director of Operation Breadbasket but left the SCLC in 1971 to establish People United to Save Humanity (PUSH). PUSH was designed to further economic and political empowerment, focusing on urban education and minority business development. /4

Operation Breadbasket was founded in 1962 to improve economic opportunities for African Americans. Under Jackson’s leadership, the Chicago chapter succeeded in negotiating 2,000 jobs for a total of $15 million a year in new income for the black community in its first 15 months of operation /3

Jackson first met MLK in Selma, Ala., where he participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches. He joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and MLK soon appointed him as the first director of the Chicago chapter of the SCLC’s Operation Breadbasket. /2
