The group in #brianhie.bsky.social at Stanford used AI to design the first-ever functional bacteriophages. AI can explore countless phage genomes in silico, speeding discovery of new alternatives to antibiotics. A breakthrough for #AMR, but also raises ethical & safety questions. #AI #Biotech

In a new preprint from @brianhie.bsky.social's lab, the team reports the first generative design of viable bacteriophage genomes.

Leveraging Evo 1 & Evo 2, they generated whole genome sequences, resulting in 16 viable phages with distinct genomic architectures.

Annual Norwegian NORM/NORM-VET report released.
Norway’s strict antibiotic policies pay off. Record-low use in humans & animals, and some of Europe’s lowest #AMR rates. But ESBL & VRE are on the rise, so vigilance is vital.

I’m looking forward to hosting the Resisforce and Norse annual international #AMR symposium.

Oct.24th the focus is on how to communicate complex topics in a time of low trust in knowledge and high polarization.

A new Ebola outbreak in Congo’s Kasai province has killed 15 people, with 28 suspected cases of the Zaire strain. WHO is aiding the response, but recent aid cuts challenge containment.

Building the lost U.S. Ebola expertise and response capacity takes time.
