Last night, we watched an episode of Zillow Gone Wild wherein a young girl in the 1970s convinced her parents in Lake Tahoe to paint her bedroom like the palace at Knossos and I have never felt closer to a small child.

Je suis bien conscient que mes collègues historiens sont pour une très grande partie en contradiction avec moi sur ce point, mais je maintiens néanmoins mon propos : on ne combat pas une narration romancée efficace avec la froide efficacité des faits. Il faut une contre mythologie.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, these ancient models of Mediterranean imperialism became central interlocutors in the colonial imaginary, only to be challenged by Maghrebi writers, artists, and freedom fighters. This lecture will examine several North African sites of contested classicism and ideological rupture. These include crumbling triumphal monuments in Tazoult (Lambaesis), fractured Punico-Libyan inscriptions from Dougga, and cafés bombed during the Battle of Algiers. Ultimately, such reimagined histories of Rome, Carthage, and Numidia, whether projected upon arches or detonated in ice cream parlors, can shatter illusions about both colonial and postcolonial rule in the Maghreb. Kyle Khellaf is Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature and Classics at the University of California, Riverside, where he teaches courses on ancient and modern empires, classical historiography, and colonial and postcolonial North Africa.
