Honestly . . . I would have been more impressed if he had simply remained at his post and refused the order. Make the admin fire him and loudly explain why he refused, why he was being replaced, and why it was wrong.

It shouldn't . . . but there are two basic factors involved.
1) Soldiers are conditioned by training to obey orders, for MANY good and valid reasons. It becomes habit, an unconscious response.
2) Illegal orders RARELY start with, "grab that person and kill them". It is usually the end of a chain.
