A CSH study challenges the widely held belief that #emotions make us more susceptible to #misinformation. The study, led by @hannahmetzler.bsky.social, reveals that emotions shape our perceptions, but don't impair our ability to distinguish between real and #falsenews. 👉 shorturl.at/FzHs1

The timing of an emotion (before vs after news exposure) matters to understand if emotions influence misinformation belief. Further, it's not enough to say that people react emotionally to misinformation: People react with anger both when they believe and disbelieve false news items. More details 👇

😡Emotions ≠ 🤓Reasoning?! Nope! 😎
@apeksha.bsky.social's & @julaluehring.bsky.social's first PhD paper on recognizing COVID-19 misinformation & links with emotions got accepted! If you haven't already seen the preprint, have a look at the paper or this 🧵! doi.org/10.1186/s412...

Cool work by @julaluehring.bsky.social on NewsGuard as a resource for misinformation research!

The paper also touches on NewsGuard's usefulness for source-based research on misinformation in countries other than the US. 👇

I would interpret this as a result of "quantity before quality" design of social media (and ultimately reflects the business model), where everything, the velocity, the scrolling, the thumbnails, the share button, encourages this (+ motives of signalling identity rather than sharing information).

Arlie Hochschild introduced this idea of “deep stories”. Deep stories are the stories we (groups of humans) tell ourselves about who we are, what our values are. They reflect our hopes, fears and anxieties. Importantly, deep stories don’t have to be true — they just have to *feel* true.
