Congrats also Feng Zhou and all the authors. This is a good example of how careful examination doesn’t lead to a more complicated model, but instead reveals a simpler one that actually makes sense!

@pablidopsis.bsky.social and I write about the cell's decision between division and differentiation. 🌱 What factors promote one or the other in different cell types? 🤔 Are they really mutually exclusive?

Amazing work by the Santiago lab @unil.bsky.social. The malectin-LRR receptor kinase IGP1 senses cello-oligomers to alert the plant immune system & enhance disease resistance. Very nice discovery & mechanism.

✨ To make this possible, we developed LRTracker (stable) and iLRTracker (inducible) with versatile reporters—powerful tools to study how e.g. environment controls LRP formation and the decision between LR and cambium fate. 3/3
apmahonen.bsky.social
🔀 Key insights:
• Cytokinin pushes LRPs toward cambium fate via LBD3/4, PXY, WOX4.
• Auxin promotes lateral root (LR) fate in xylem pole pericycle (XPP) cells—but its power fades as roots mature.
• This reveals the plasticity of XPP cell lineage: cells can toggle between forming LRs or cambium. 2/x

🌱 What happens when lateral root primordia (LRPs) fail to emerge?
Using our new lineage tracing tool LRTracker, Xin discovered that arrested LRPs don’t just disappear—they gradually switch fate and become part of the cambium, contributing to secondary growth.1/x

Hormonal regulation of cell fate plasticity of xylem-pole-pericycle lineage in Arabidopsis roots
In Arabidopsis roots, xylem-pole-pericycle (XPP) cells exhibit dual cell fates by contributing to both lateral root (LR) and cambium formation. Despit…
