We didn't have a quorum for playing D&D tonight so we played Citadels. I had forgotten how fun that hidden role, city building game can be.

Here's one more batch of sculptures from the ice festival.

Here are some more highlights from the ice festival this weekend.

Saturday and Sunday I visited the Dartmouth Ice Festival with my family. The ice carvings were stunning.

While in Dartmouth today we stopped at a shop my sister knew and they had many stickers with local themes. I got a few to add to my laptop and lapdock.

Our intrepid Coldbrew Thunderhammer survived his third delve. He defeated a Vampire Queen and left with spoils. Rolls were more in my favour today, so I had a better experience in this play through of One-Shot Dungeon.

In his second outing, Coldbrew Thunderhammer barely made it out alive after a dungeon crawl ending in a battle with a Gargoyle. One-Shot Dungeon continues to be a tough but fun diversion.

HeroQuest's goblin miniatures are definitely among my least favorite depictions of goblins, but were one of my earliest exposures to the creatures.

I picked up One-Shot Dungeon this week and got around to playing it today. It's a dungeon crawling RPG built with 1d6 for all rolls and uses tables heavily to build and populate a dungeon. The simple mechanics make for a tough but fun game. Coldbrew […]

I was given Sushi Go! years ago but today I finally sat down to play with Celestine. The cute cards and simple mechanics are big plusses. She bounced off the scoring and strategy, but I think it will eventually be a game we return to often.

Today we visited the Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity at Dalhousie University for the first time. It's a modest space but Celestine loved seeing the aquariums, whale skeleton, and other displays. Seeing hermit crabs swapping shells was a highlight. It was […]

Nintendo's 2025 recap arrived yesterday. I spent most of the time playing in 2025 with Xenoblade Chronicles X. I still love that game.

Before it was released I played some of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and in November and December I played some of […]

Today I found some time to install and play The Legend of Zelda - Zelda's Awakening DX ROM hack. From the little I was able to play, it feels like a loving, careful insertion of Zelda into Link's role.

The MacDonald Bridge is closed all weekend, so instead of our typical grocery shopping I took Celestine to Bayer's Lake. While there I found another adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, Anne Arrives, at a thrift shop. I've been reading any adaptation of the book […]

Earlier this week I played Escape from Atlantis for the first time with Celestine. I had been given the game by a friend years ago and finally sat down to play.

The pieces are excessively bulky, but it was a fun game once setup was done. The mechanics are easy […]

In 2025 I set a gentler goal for myself to read 50 books in the year. I passed that with 60 books, averaging 5/month.

I track my reading at BookWyrm, a bright part of the fediverse.

I'm at @[email protected] .

This year I set a goal to read 52 books so I […]

I learned today that Charles de Lint published a new novel this month and that earlier in the year he released this image as merch. Newford stories enriched my compassion and solidarity, and I'm happy de Lint continues to centre that in his fiction.

In 2025 I ran more kilometers (1261) than any year since I started running consistently in 2014 after I started with Zombies, Run! I'm happy I could be more consistent this year and was especially thrilled to finally get back to doing an in-person race in September.

I taught Celestine to play the game Atlantis tonight. I thought it might be too complicated, but after the fairly complex setup, she was able to play through to the end. Tonet joined us mid-game, so it was a brief family game night.

We met up with Celestine's oldest friend and his mom at the oval for skating today. She's learning fast.

Afterwards, the kids had a great time sliding around the skate park nearby.
