Lianne La Havas (self titled)

Laid back mellow soul. There’s a lot of cool takeaways from this, like how Lianne sounds like other famous female r&b singers sometimes. Or the cover right in the middle of the album. Good vibes all around while she doesn’t try to cry over the past.

Replica - Oneohtrix Point Never

You’re stuck in the past and something that looks like you is chasing you. You think back on all the decisions in life that led you to this point. Some good, some bad.

The Mollusk - Ween

If nautical nonsense be something you wish, then listen to this from start to finish. Occasional sea shanties, good ass production, and a bunch of goofy shit in-between. Not the worst thing in the world to listen to, 3/5.

Glean - They Might Be Giants

The regular goofy tmbg flair that started off with a few songs that might’ve done numbers in the 90’s if they were on another band’s album (this is a compliment). Everything else didn’t seem to do anything, so either im not a fan or i don’t like fun.

Civilization II - Kero Kero Bonito

A more upbeat sounding EP where aliens don’t try to communicate with me with the traditional sounds from other cultures and instead give me an ultimatum because the world’s in a shit spot right now. That ultimatum *did* have good production.

Civilization I - Kero Kero Bonito

Very good indie pop EP that sounds like first contact between myself and an un contacted alien species I have yet to figure out. Short description only because im listening to the follow up!

I Love My Computer - Ninajirachi

Heartfelt love letter to the late 00s/early 10s electro house music that inspired her. Every song either feels like a modernized take on these or straight up got ripped from an ipod over a decade ago.

CASIOPEA - casiopea

Fast paced jazz fusion that either felt like really groovy lounge music or something that matched the cover of two cars racing. Lots of cool little details in here that I can’t describe other than bass + horns = fun. Enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Grace Under Pressure - Rush

Rush sounds like a fully matured band and took a swing at fusing prog rock and new wave. The logical step after moving pictures and a bit more funky too. 3.5/5.

Tranquilizer - Oneohtrix Point Never

They made nostalgia into a drug and injected it in my veins and the high sent me to a lush garden paradise with everything I’ve ever wanted. Then I mellowed out and got lost in a dark jungle. Then I came back to reality at the end, that was just ok.

The Great Annihilator - Swans

I started the apocalypse and the thing causing it took over my body and tried to show me what I can do with this power.

Another way to put it is this sounds like the world that was talked about in that one gybe album *before* that album spoke of it.

The Forever Story - JID

JID’s verses kept their foot on the gas and didn’t slow down until he remembered that he needed to slow down, so he took the scenic route home. Great album front to back.

Rated R - Queens of the Stone Age

The bridge between Kyuss and QOTSA, with all the drugs and alcohol to boot. There’s literally two songs that sound like refreshed kyuss tracks while the rest is a bunch of escapades in LA before you get your shit together to drive out west.

Double Cup - DJ Rashad

You’re going clubbing in Chicago and the dj seems like they’re still getting the hang of things. Not the best set ever but it’s still good enough to keep the fun going. 3.5/5.

EUSEXUA Afterglow - FKA twigs

The DJ’s winding down and the fatigue from being out all night is starting to hit you, so why not soak up the dance floor a little longer before you go? Not a bad follow up, but it feels more like a disorganized set to play yourself out to. 3.5/5.

Home, Like Noplace Is There - The Hotelier

You’re stuck in your room and the thoughts you give yourself after 9pm are winning out. You’ve had a rough day/week and have nowhere else to vent those thoughts. 3/5.

BY THE THROAT - Ben Frost

Boyfriend @tetra.fm did a write up on this and got my eye with the Tim Hecker mention. You’re thrown in the middle of an endless snowy land faced with mother nature not caring for how warm bodies get cold. Cold, unforgiving, and running out of time. 4/5.

Incunabula - Autechre

This sounds like a soundtrack to a 90’s computer game with dated looking graphics and lots of fun action scenes. That both helped and hurt it in my mind, but you could do worse with this kind of electronic music. 3.5/5

Discipline - King Crimson

Robert Fripp dares to ask the question: what if prog rock got funky? The answer is a front to back heater of an album that really shouldn’t be 37 minutes. Ever active guitars, a classic ballad, even a talking heads-like track. Honestly blew me away, 4/5.

El jardín de los presentes - Invisible

Very interesting album. Argentina based prog rock with some romantic and lonely sounds mixed with a really good track that’s dedicated to a guitar solo. It’s neat to see what other countries bring to the table and this one isn’t too bad. 3/5.

…And the Circus Leaves Town - Kyuss

Heavy tones to be subdued by. Honestly might be a better Kyuss album to introduce people to than their debut. It’s like you’re stuck out west smoking weed as you wait for a ride home.

Stankonia - Outkast

This is like a guy you meet who’s all flashy and wears his personality on his sleeve before you really get to know him after a few drinks. Very funky, full of love, and a bit all over the place (in a good way).

brat - charli xcx

We’re a year removed from brat summer and my verdict is out: it’s fine. The highs are high and the lows are OK electronic pop songs. 3.5/5.

A Farewell to Kings - Rush

For almost its entire runtime this was The Alex Lifeson Show. Then it got into weird scifi stuff, which is ok because it’s rush and if you don’t like that then you won’t be long for this world.
