Because not all families are storybook cookie cutter mum, dad and their kids. And not everybody wants to get married. There is no way Emily Bronte writes a villain who had a pack of good dogs who don't bite people.

The End

With Nelly's stories of ghosts to keep people distant or explain any sighting of them. Cathy and Heathcliff are dead, go look at their graves.

Whatever, because by the end of the story Cathy is not dead and Heathcliff is not dead. They have raised between them people who can live independent lives so they can retire to WH with each with their favorite person, their sibling. To sit by the fire with their good dogs and walk the moors

Anyway, for whatever reason as the second Cathy grows older, things change because the facade that the 1st Cathy is using of unnamed housekeeper is changed to Zillah. Is Edgar killed at this point to protect the 2nd Cathy. Or later and is in Heathcliff's grave?

Did Nelly lie when Cathy was born, that she won't kill anyone and she did actually kill Edgar and he is in Cathy's grave, because is he ever seen in public again?

Did Nelly the storyteller use Linton, supposedly Heathcliff son as proxy as a means to describe Edgar's personality as a whiney, needy, selfish, demanding, manipulative and annoying.

It is Edgar plan to marry his daughter to his son, but was he even born? Was all the blood from Hindley's hand actually Isabella miscarrying? A detail everyone kept from Edgar to keep him in line.

Linton. Is he even real? he is born on London, the marriage or funeral isn't on page, his grave is not even mentioned.

Hareton. He is working, caring for the animals, so is everyone in his home. Heathcliff down at the fold, and going out when the snow starts. Cathy in the kitchen, Joseph milking the cows. It is not a degradation to work.
And of course he can read, he has Cathy's book in his room

Therefore has no defences to being coerced or manipulated. Or an independent adult life.

The next generation, Cathy, Hareton, and Linton. Cathy has material comfort, but she is living in a prison. Her father is the only person she know, and he spends a lot of time with his "books". Everyone else is a servant, She doesn't have skills or relationships, dependent on dad.

12 sheep seems a very small flock, also Hareton is hunting game and rabbits.

Everybody is set to work to keep food on the table. Stores of beef, mutton, ham and oatcakes as Mr LW describes in his first visit are home grown. And Cathy's protectiveness over the tea as if it is a valuable luxury doesn't signal wealth.

Heathcliff and Cathy raise Hareton in gentile poverty. Mr E was supporting a second family, and Hindley gambled near everything away. Were the fields and quarry sold to Edgar to repay debt? Because all they have left is the house and the farm.

Baby Catherine is called Catherine, like Heathcliff is named Heathcliff after the dead, because of the naming convention and of course no one knows about Cathy's first baby.

Cathy trusting that Nelly and Isabella's truth of Edgar's crime will keep her daughter Cathy safe.

The curate buries an empty coffin, six months later when Hindley dies of natural causes Cathy goes into the kitchen, like Isabella did in the letter to Nelly, and works as the housekeeper known by Nelly as "A women whom I knew, and who formerly lived at Gimmerton" for 15 years!

Cathy goes into labour, Nelly drugs Edgar. Cathy gives birth, then Heathcliff take her to WH where she hides in the attic room with the indigo quilt, as described in Isabella letter. Like stories from America where Black people seeking freedom used the Underground Railroad.

Ain't that the truth. Nelly's also doping Mr Lockwood's coffee to keep him from the Heights.

Cathy and Heathcliff's last meeting. Where near monosyllabic Heathcliff, who is emotionally stoic is ejaculating eloquently his love for Cathy, is made up. Nelly bare faced lies to Mr Lockwood because as an experienced storyteller, she knows tales of thwarted lovers are memorable.

Meanwhile Heathcliff doesn't shout at the curate, but recruits Shielders ( is that Jabes Branderham's name disguised or another curate?) to help.

The first time Heathcliff visits The Grange since his return, Cathy doesn't touch a drop of tea, while Edgar has some but spills some in his basin. Foreshadowing.

While Cathy fakes a mental health episode, Mr Kenneth calls ( life has improved for him now since he stopped going to the Heights to drink and gamble with Hindley and Edgar so he has gained an honorific) where he supplies the drugs to dope Edgar's tea.

Because just like Isabella's dog Fanny, Cathy is not dead. As Nelly says through Isabella's mouth, she will help, but draws the line at killing people.
