Book 8 of 2025 is coincidentally book 8 of the Mainely Needlepoint mystery series. I definitely preferred the series before some of the main characters had to get into heteronormal relationships. Yet they still work as a trashy read. More details in the alt text 💙📚
It's the cover of Thread on Arrival by Lea Wait which is the 8th book in the series. Another Nancy Drew/Sweet Valley High for 20-somethings. How the Mainely Needlepointers produce so much work when they're always busy doing other things still amazes me. All I can presume is the cushions and sachets are all very small, or not actually needlepoint, or the author has no idea about the craft. The series is inoffensive (as murder goes) and an easy read.

Book 7 for 2025 was my first introduction to @richardosman1.bsky.social as an author. I can only apologise for being late to the party and rectify it by adding all other books to my wishlist. 💙📚 All the rest of my thoughts and details are in the alt text as usual.
It's the cover of Richard Osman's book We Solve Murders. It features both red and black writing and a red and black picture of a cat, the barrel of a gun and a sun (I think). I've not got any red spaces on my bookopoly board yet so I think this one will go there. As for the book: loved it, I had a few ideas who the mystery characters were and whodunnit. And I was gloriously wrong! It's a rare occasion when I don't spot the obvious patterns and work it out. I read this book as it's this month's Sugar and Sloth book club book. I'll be adding Richard Osman as another author to my wishlist now.

However, on Goodreads it's a blue cover with a crouching Goddess in black and white covered in a big red circle with the title on. At times I found the book hard going. I almost abandoned it, but glad I persisted with it. I don't think I'd realised just how violent, vengeful and incestuous the Greek immortals are, and just how sanitised more modern depictions have become from the original stories.

Yesterday's trip to our local BGC we played Sky Team, Katamino, and Lacuna. All the details in the alt text.

Katamino is more of a solo puzzle game and didn't hit the spot for us. I also forgot to take a picture.

That's 5 games played in 2025 so far. 💙🎲
A picture of the Sky Team board setup up on the one occasion we successfully landed the plane. Instruments showing the plane is horizontal, landing gear down, brakes on, flaps set correctly and all air traffic cleared for a safe touchdown. I can't remember who recommended Sky Team, it's got lots of playability and has gone on the wishlist. I wouldn't recommend flying Appleton Airlines, we did successfully land in Montreal but only after our first attempt ended with us barrel rolling into the runway. To celebrate we followed our successful landing with a mid-air collision over Heathrow. Lacuna was a staff recommendation and my initial thought was to screw my nose up at flowers, but she sold the gameplay to me. The pieces are really tactile and I love that the box the game comes in becomes the shaker. The picture shows a black/navy cloth with a pond on that's the playing area. Inside it you scatter the brightly coloured flowers. I totally missed half of the strategy of the game on the first play so best of 3 games went to Mr A who was much better at the strategy from the start. You have 6 metal pawns each and have to claim flowers to win. Simple to get the hang of sand start playing to learn your strategy.

Lehuauakea's art explores their cultural and environmental spectrum, especially stories of injustice and resilience.

January's reading round up showing a calendar with the covers of the books I've read during the month on the days I read them. I started the year finishing The Lost Bookshop so haven't counted it in my 2025 reading challenge. Next up was Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, Foxglove Summer, Murder by Narwhal, Thread Herrings, What Abigail Did That Summer. I've started Divine Might, as well as listening to Black Bird Oracle so they'll carry on into February. I also read the next chapter of Quiet for book club at work.

Book 5 of the year. This one has interesting reviews that seemed to depend on whether the reader chose publication or chronological order. I wonder if the reading order is as contentious as the viewing order of Star Wars.

For those of us old enough to remember the Sweet Valley High and Sweet Dreams series this series is like those mixed with a Nancy Drew murder mystery for 20 somethings. This one had less of the [unrealistic to me] volume and speed of needlepoint completions and focused the stitching element on an antique embroidery.

Third book of the year read. A great recommendation from friends at work.

Yes, it's a kids book. This one is a great closed room murder mystery that also happens to nail representation and diversity in a nonchalant way. I'm definitely checking out more by this author. 💙📚

I've also finished my first #CrossStitch 🧶 Craftiverse. The pattern is Die Hard is a Christmas Movie from Science& Stitchery on Etsy. It's stitched on evenweave that a friend found at a car boot (the same fabric the llama I did last year). So I made them this as a thank you.
Green fabric with a white and red Die Hard design in the style of a Christmas jumper. I tweaked the wording as the recipient has a child so it says Yippee Ki Yay Motherfudger. My favourite bit is Nakatomi Plaza. There is also a tape measure to demonstrate that the whole thing is only 15cm wide.

My November reading challenge went well. I read every day smashing the 10 minutes a day target with a total of 19 hours 37 minutes. I've enjoyed swapping the morning and lunchtime doom scrolling and finished 6 books. 📚💙

Tonight's win is that I didn't give up in art class. I think this was at least the 15th attempt at getting the shape of these rings somewhere close. I'd have definitely rage quit in the past. So the actual picture is irrelevant, the fact that there is any picture is the win tonight.
