Another really interesting (and useful for teaching) issue of the @apsamena.bsky.social Newsletter... with special sections of the question of a "New Regional Order" in the Middle East and the legacies of the Biden Administration's policy towards the Middle East.

Dear colleagues studying Middle East politics: The latest issue of our APSA section newsletter MENA Politics is now out -- 80+ pages of important updates, reports, and analysis. You can find it here: zenodo.org/records/1538... #Menasky #Polisky

Congratulations to the new editorial team for a wonderfully rich first issue!
apsamena.bsky.social
Check out @maydarwich.bsky.social's essay alongside others in our latest newsletter, covering whether and what shape the "new regional order" is taking, including a feature essay by Louise Fawcett and a very rich set of essays in the symposium.

Pleased to have contributed to the APSA MENA Newsletter Thanks to the editors @dbgreenwald.bsky.social @sebnemgumuscu.bsky.social @samershehata.bsky.social for putting together such an amazing collection!
My piece: zenodo.org/records/1533...
The Issue: zenodo.org/records/1538...
apsamena.bsky.social
The issue covers 3 main topics: the possibility of a new regional order; the politics of time; and the Biden administration's legacy in the region. There's a feature essay, two symposia, and a roundtable! You'll also find updates from @arabpsn.bsky.social, the APSA MENA program, and section news.
apsamena.bsky.social
In their introduction to the issue, the editors reflect on challenges ahead given ongoing attacks against free speech in academia, with Middle East studies at its centre. They also push us, however, to not lose sight of developments in the region. The contributions to the issue aim to do both.
apsamena.bsky.social
The Spring issue of our section's newsletter is out! It's the first one with the wonderful incoming editorial team @dbgreenwald.bsky.social @sebnemgumuscu.bsky.social & Samer Shehatat - and it's jam-packed!

Rabab El Mahdi's piece is, as usual, 🔥.

I've never liked the flattening, simplification, and depoliticization of 'local' or 'field' perspectives, even while appreciating that things do look very different in different contexts and with historical memory.
apsamena.bsky.social
This is a big one! We have two symposia, a book review roundtable, and a provocative and remarkable opening essay by Rabab El Mahdi that problematizes the framing of 'regional' or 'local' perspectives within Middle East political science. #menasky

The new @apsamena.bsky.social issue features a symposium on Gaza solidarity protests, including an article by @jannisgrimm.bsky.social and me on student protests in Berlin and the securitization of campus politics

And finally, as with all our newsletters, this one is also beautifully done with some cover art from an image drawn by students at Lebanon Unsettled Project at USEK in July 2022 and provided by Deen Sharp (who contributed an essay to the symposium on student encampments).
apsamena.bsky.social
We’re also thrilled to welcome four new editorial board members! @sharangrewal.bsky.social Amanda Rizkallah @rola-husseini.bsky.social & Selin Bengi Gümrükçü
apsamena.bsky.social
Our book roundtable focuses on Mehran Kamrava’s book How Islam Rules in Iran with contributions from Paola Rivetti, Eric Lob, & Norma Clair Moruzzi followed by Mehran’s response and reflections.
apsamena.bsky.social
The second symposium reflects on university students’ Gaza Solidarity Encampments of spring 2024 & situates them within broader historical and contemporary student protests both within the MENA & in other regions.
