It is thought that the mythical hound is always looking for previously buried bottles of ale which were lost in the mists of time.

The children of the village are subliminally aware of Saxon and often leave him a peace offering in the form of opened and half eaten crisp packets. In the short nights of summer, Saxon has been known to dig vast potholes behind the village hall.

Returned to The Tavern.
Once the barrel has been opened, it resorts to its original instincts by urinating on the feet of those drinking lager. When the pub has run dry of Saxon, its anguished howl can often be heard on the winter winds over Crawley.

While the English Beer Hound breed died out many centuries ago, a mythical hound of this breed named Saxon still haunts the Tavern of Crawley. Its ghost often rides shotgun to Alfred’s brewery on a weekly basis to collect the beer named after it and breaks wind with joy when the triumphant barrel is

English Ale and would become highly agitated until it made it to the pub.
Conversely this forced Aethelred to keep additional stocks of ale at home, so that once the pub had been drunk dry, the hound would then have a scent it could use to tow him home.
