Swim, dnd, and the state of both.
Worldbuilding in TTRPGs is interesting because there are lots of different opinions on the topic. My personal style is actually outside in which I imagine many people don't like. I create a global situation then work my way back to where characters start. This allows me to have world events

Really fun dnd session this morning. Ran with minimal prep and allowed my players to just explore the capital city they were in. Lots of great RP and a natural exploration allowed the city to come alive. Also, players have been discussing trying to play more often than once every two weeks.

Team time trial meet today. Always a stressful time for me when I am coaching because I dont know how people will do and it really is completely out of my control. However, I think these monthly check in meets are really important to see how the team is doing and if you need to change up training

Sometimes game prep or workout prep gets difficult because you have too many ideas or just have a mental block. The best way to get through this is to start writing something...sometimes that is enough to get something flowing. Or look to find inspiration in something completely unrelated.

It has been one of the best nfl playoffs I can remember. All the games have been excellent (niners Seahawks not withstanding). Watching defense rule the day has been a fun time over the past 2 weeks.
Enjoy sports at this time of the year. Football, basketball, the winter Olympics on the way.

Knowing how to race is an underrated part of sport especially in training sports like track or swim. You can train at a high level but knowing how to flip the switch is an acquired skill just like anything else. Race pace is great but relays or races during practice are important to help athletes

Balancing work/friends/personal is one of the great things that sports teaches you growing up. Any extra curricular activity can do the job but sport helps teach discipline that you can use for the rest of your life. Go out of your comfort zone and try something new this year and find your balance

Working on bring back a player into one of my games after a long hiatus. Everyone will be really happy to have them back but figuring out logical reasons for them to return while giving them an out to leave if needed is tricky. Astral projection is the easiest way but that seems

Workout Wednesday
A drill progression I have been working on for backstroke is all about body position and adding in more resistance to create a stronger line when the added difficulty disappears. Not a new concept to be sure but holding your line with arms up holding body position has worked well.

Dnd travel is always a sore point with a lot of groups. Some people hate travel and hand wave it often while others spend lots of time building out a travel sequence. My personal take is travel is a great opportunity for players to role play with flexibility to let anything happen

Main set Monday
Sometimes all you need is a great base to make a set work. One of my favorite baseline pieces is just a simple 25, 50, 75 where the athletes are building speed and then culminate the set with something fast 4x25, or 50s and then running as many repeats as needed.

Didn't have my dnd game last night, people were sick, traveling ect. Normal stuff but it did affect me more than I expected. That was the first session we cancelled last minute in over a year. Scheduling is always the BBG of dnd groups and I dont expect it to happen to this one but you never know.

One of the last full weekends of football with lots of exciting match ups across both conferences. My picks for the record Rams, Packers, Niners in the NFC and Jags, Pats, Texans in the AFC. Hoping to see better games than the Indiana Oregon game last night

Congratulations on making it through the first work week of 2026. Only 51 more to go before 2027 so take advantage of every opportunity to have fun, improve yourself, and make the world a better place.

Ran my east coast game this morning and it was a great time. Taking inspiration from pre-made modules and one-shot concepts are a great way to bring in a slightly different vibe from the usual style. When writing or creating games it is important to realize inspiration isnt cheating

TTRPG Tuesday-kids on brooms
Same basic concept of kids on bikes but with a magic based bent instead of early 80s America
Just another reminder that all systems have their own niche and forcing one to do something it isnt got at isnt always the best way to approach running a game
January 6, 2026 at 2:08 PM
Main set Monday
6x50 @5:00 all out
Sometimes main sets don't need to be long to be effective. These type of sets can be a confidence booster when they go well going into meets. They can also go poorly so you need to be ready to show confidence in your athletes even if you are nervous internally.

Empathy is an important part of coaching. Finding what makes your athletes motivated and how they best learn is an important part of being good at your job. Knowledge is important but can be learned. Understanding people is a skill that makes good coaches great. Allow your personality to shine.

First rainy day of the new year. Swimming in the rain is always fun coaching in in the rain doesn't always fill that same vibe. Still energy is infectious so your attitude will rub off on anyone you coach so it is important to showcase whatever emotion you want to impart to your athletes

As the new year starts and the weather starts finally shifting to winter remember to maintain a positive outlook. Don't let one mistake become 2 or 3. If you have a resolution dont let one bad day make it all go away. Remember a journey of 1000 miles starts with a single step and sleeping is okay

Kids on Bikes
I really liked the system when I played it and the game allows for a lot of interesting shenanigans from players. I think you need to be pretty creative to make it run well because the system has a lighter rule set than dnd. Great introduction to the different dice

Workout Wednesday
Workouts dont need to be complicated to be effective. Using equipment and tools are great but remember all the fancy equipment in the world doesn't make up for grit and hard work. Allow that to supplement your workout but you and not your stuff are the reason for improvement

TTRPG Tuesday-
Dnd
The current and forever hotness. although there are some flaws with the system it is versatile and there is so much content made for the system it has the flexibly that some of the other newer systems lack. I grew up playing dnd and the comfort I feel with the system is obvious
