People think that reviews skewer form over substance now but it's always been like.
In all seriousness, it's better now.
It was even worse before.
Take Aero Fighters 3, it's the one that play best in the series but it released in 1995 and doesn't have any 3D elements so some reviewers hated it.

With the internet widely available no kid will ever experience again having to sit and watch whatever is on tv because it's raining and you can't go out.

Moon logic puzzles, softlocks, technical issues like lockups and save file limits.
The voice acting and the writing is great and superior to many games today but that's not the gameplay and that's important to me.
Half of these are usless.

Duke Nukem 3D is a bit of a weird title, a bit of self-awareness and a bit self-seriousness, helps that the creativity in the levels is off the charts start to finish.
