ive seen before where people will stick with drawing a specific generation of the character to avoid issues with the age appearance fluctuating (not including minors!! thats nassty) it still treads rough path though, like the Link situation you brought up

my general consensus is to not. some of the characters have explicitly stated ages but theres so much fluctuation in other characters portrayed ages like in prime to 06 or frontiers that make it really difficult to give decisive answer thats applicable for all appearances of said character.
