The Cameron Bluffs fire had threatened Cathedral Grove, home to an ancient forest of trees, some as old as 800 years.

Cathedral Grove was thankfully spared.

In these challenging times of climate change, let’s not forget how vulnerable our wildlife and ecosystems are.

For the first time in living memory, the only paved highway connecting the eastern part of the island to the west, was shut down to travellers, and it stayed closed for 3 weeks. In that month alone, the highway closure cut off essential travel to Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino.

On June 6, 2023, while I was travelling west along Hwy 4 to Vancouver Island’s west coast, a forest fire appeared at the eastern edge of Cameron Lake. A small forest fire, which started 3 days prior, had rapidly grown into a sprawling inferno high on the cliffs above.
