For a formal survey, we’d refer to them as ‘surface’ or ‘near-surface’ finds but they still have context. A chance find to us is a bit of an orphan. You might not formally explore the context further or it could be something handed in by a neighbour or local person. Hope this helps 😊

We use ‘chance finds’ to cover anything that turns up outside of a formal excavation.
