5. Buyers should be realistic about communication methods; for a buyer with 10,000 suppliers, it isn't necessarily possible to sit down and talk with all of them individually. Using different modalities, like multi-stakeholder initiatives or forums can be effective.

2. At the same time, the term 'leverage' is increasingly seen as perpetuating the power difference between buyer and supplier. Under a strict compliance approach buyers are expected to enforce compliance, with suppliers often assumed to be the one at fault.

1. Leverage can offer a method of implementing shared responsibility practices. It does not affect the business’s responsbility to prevent or mitigate the impact in question – it simply informs the appropriate action that the business can take to this end.
