"Journalism can't exist under totalitarianism," reminds Yekaterina Barabash, who fled Russia after being charged for criticising the invasion of Ukraine.

Her reference is also a challenge to review how we label regimes that have long outgrown the word "authoritarian."

The arrest at Baku’s request is yet another example of authoritarian regimes partnering effectively to silence dissent.
