US, EU, Turkey and Arab countries meet in Jordan on Syria.
Diplomats from the United States, Turkey, the European Union and Arab countries met yesterday in Jordan to discuss Syria. The meeting ended with a consensus message that the new Syrian authorities must respect the rights of minorities.

With so much strife, no wonder many share a fatalistic belief that Syria is doomed to collapse into civil war once again. If it does so, they rightly warn, it will export refugees, jihadists and instability beyond the Middle East and into Europe.

Syria’s new powerbrokers are hardly men of peace. Until 2016 Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was known as Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of alQaeda. Its founder, Ahmad al-Sharaa, had fought the Americans as a member of IS in Iraq under the nom de guerre Abu Muhammad al-Jolani.
