Let’s rethink how we relate knowledge, care, and policy relevance.
Can we build science-policy interfaces that are more plural, reflective, and just?

I am grateful for the excellent collaboration with my co-authors:
Giulia De Fusco, @davidludwig.bsky.social , @charbelelhani.bsky.social , @estherturnhout.bsky.social

Thank you to everyone at @bpbes.bsky.social who shared their time and knowledge with us.

We investigate this through the case of BPBES and its Summaries for Decision-Makers. Our analysis shows that care shapes the content, process, and impact of BPBES assessments — but it's often constrained by dominant, linear models of the science-policy interface.

Can knowledge for decision-making be both policy-relevant and caring?
Can it be attentive not only to scientific credibility, but also to people, more-than-human beings, and the messy realities of biodiversity governance?

Next step: I’ll use the award to travel to Brazil to deliver the book in person, to listen and give thanks.
A small gesture toward a world where babassu breakers and mother palm trees can thrive. 🌴💚

In response to the MIQCB’s call to return shared knowledge, I’m creating a retribution book—a collaborative return of the research in their voices. It’s supported by the GEOS project (NWO Vidi grant, led by
@davidludwig.bsky.social).

This paper is a result of collective care, knowledge, and resistance. I owe deep thanks to the Interstate Movement of Babassu Breakers (MIQCB), my co-authors Prof. Carmen Lucia Lima, @estherturnhout.bsky.social, and everyone who supported this work.

We conclude by reflecting on how more-than-human care can illuminate the invisible, while critically examining its role in fieldwork practices, theoretical insights, and biodiversity conservation.
aressiorec.bsky.social
We highlight 4 key dimensions:
1️⃣ Care as vital & everyday
2️⃣ Human-nonhuman relationality
3️⃣ Interspecies reciprocity
4️⃣ Flourishing for as many as possible
aressiorec.bsky.social
We connect feminist care ethics, post-humanist thinking, & local knowledge & practices of care. By engaging with humans & non-humans, we investigate care’s role in transformative biodiversity conservation. 🌿

- Feminist care theory offers valuable perspectives for understanding the politics of conflict, existence, and resistance.
aressiorec.bsky.social
Here are some key insights:
- Care practices and narratives can resist the homogenizing effects of development.
- Interspecies relationships and care are crucial to maintaining radical hope in social movements.
