he offered to carve an extra pumpkin and bring it over (he lives an hour away) but it's probably time to rip this bandaid off

if you live in a town like this long enough, you just become the kind of person who shows a chicken to the county fair.

yeah idk man that doesn't seem to be how it works out in practice

i've just been through so much with people questioning why i had the kids memorize so much stuff, but it doesn't seem to have hurt their other mental faculties at all so. they can still remember poems they memorized when they were 3!

i understand we don't need that industrial iron at all, but it's fucking killing me that she's going to take it to the dump

i've never been very clear on what the benefits of offloading mental storage to the cloud were supposed to be anyway

oh, well, we also grew fava beans and still have some fava bean plants out there, which may or may not produce another small crop before it gets too cold

my lima beans never germinated (probably too cold when i planted them?) so i'll try again next year

over the course of the season we grew six varieties of beans. some we ended up eating only as green beans (Provider bush bean, which produces green beans quickly) and some we let almost entirely dry down into dried beans (Rattlesnake) and we have beans put up in almost every conceivable form now

the first time i saw a grizzly (brown) bear in the wild, it was sitting on railroad tracks eating grain that had apparently spilled off a rail car.

alaska has really abundant raspberries (possibly feral, rather than truly wild) growing like that. i imagine the bears there love it.

if one more guy comments on all the berries in the bear scat without immediately looking for the berries the bear is eating, i'm going to scream

if the berry calories are good enough for a bear about to go down for the winter, they're good enough for you

post-literate society is going to be *wild*
