I am afraid that for many people, it's not even a matter of not understanding. If something makes them feel uncomfortable or grossed out, they want it gone. It's authoritarian behavior, the exact opposite of "live and let live."

One thing that is really fun about enjoying underground/niche art is that it brings one in contact with new people, new discussions and inspiration. Being a little cringe is a worthy price for such a cool experience.

I assume that mindset is an effort to counter the older stereotype of metalheads as aggressive, hateful and anti-social people with no morals. I think it works for most metal fans but, like you said, there's many folks who are the complete opposite of accepting, especially in specific sub-genres.

As a Greek person, I can tell you no one in Cyprus wants the UK to rule over them again. In fact, there's a lot of anger for the years they did occupy the island.
