My 2yo has a picture book about emergency vehicles which says of police that their *job* is to keep people safe. I appreciate the specificity.

"President Donald Trump and his top aides are using the word 'insurrection' more frequently to describe anti-ICE protests in places like Portland," writes Zachary B. Wolf. https://cnn.it/4pWYmzr

I just realized a paper I always cite from 1991 has 5 citations, one of them is me, and I don't recognize any of the other papers. I assumed this paper was really influential and everyone knew what I was talking about when I mentioned it. I have no idea how I found it.

Seems like data worth centralizing

Serious question: has the Fed govt ever arrested so many elected officials in such a short period of time, across multiple cities, and not for legit corruption reasons?

This seems like a distinct degree of anti-democratic escalation.

ICE just blatantly violated the law and arrested sitting Chicago Alderperson Jessie Fuentes while seeking to illegally arrest a patient in a hospital. Fuck these fascists.

I didn’t read any of the Hegseth stuff yesterday because I wanted to see the speech for myself first.

Isn’t doing something like that in front of all the generals in the military really risky if they don’t take you seriously and they see how others don’t as well?

Because so many Black Americans live in the South, these findings might contribute to the lower life expectancy of Black Americans relative to white Americans.
It might even be related to the declines in life expectancy for Americans overall!
aricaschuett.bsky.social
They even show infants born a year **AFTER** the hurricane have lower life expectancy than they otherwise would. Parents have less money, moved, have worse or fewer medical facilities are all possible mechanisms.

This paper urges a rethink about the effects of climate disasters.
aricaschuett.bsky.social
When people and communities are affected by hurricanes, what they do to adapt--rebuild, move, spend money, etc. presents opportunity costs for the types of behavior that improve life outcomes later on. Maybe part of why we don't have bike lanes or sidewalks in the South?

🚨Cool Paper Alert🚨
Lower Life expectancy in the South is caused by hurricanes.
Why???
Path-dependent outcomes from climate disasters change the trajectories for individuals and communities.

Accidentally identifies the problem.

Why so much focus on low quality academic work? Who is highlighting this work—influential journals and programs, or culture warring critics?

A lot of research doesn’t have a political valence. Why fixate on a subset of a subset, and call it all of academia?
mattyglesias.bsky.social
To try to be restrained and persuasive:

1) Academic work (like most things) is of varying quality

2) There is an enormous leftward ideological skew to the lowest-quality work

3) 1 + 2 makes it hard for credentialed "expertise" to be credible even when most experts are good
