Penny was so tiny when she was born, that she could barely reach her mamma to nurse. We helped her in the beginning but she’s a tough little goat and she pulled through. Now she’s big and running with the mammas. (Husband for scale)

Janice and her granddaughter, Penny. You can see how their eyes swivel in this video. Their pupils typically stay level to the ground to scan the horizon for predators. It’s such a cool adaptation. The resemblance between these two is uncanny, both in looks and attitude. 🤎🖤

Out on the scarred salt flats of Trona, walks a mineral -encrusted mule. The specter can be spotted at sunrise, wandering about the steam vents and mineral planes of the dry lake. The mule showed up when prospectors were surveying the area for its worth.

Our first year, we started making Cajeta, a dulce de leche (caramel sauce) that originates in Mexico. It’s pretty dang good on desserts, in coffee and on breads and toast. It’s also great on cheese!

Two little chèvre’s from our goats. Two years ago, we started a backyard goat farm and this year I learned to make cheese. It’s been a journey to get to this point and we’ve got lots of goals ahead. We are so grateful for our goats and their hard work. It’s been a privilege to work with them.

I do a lot of hiking here in Los Cerrillos. I often ponder the ocean that used to be here and what sort of creatures swam along the trails I now walk over. Sometimes you can sense them in the night, when the wind blows and sounds just like the sea. 🌊

Krascheninnikovia lanata or winterfat. A fluffy shrub that blooms during the colder months here in the mountain west. It is an important protein source for herbivores in the winter and was used as a sheep forage, hair wash, and fever relief by various indigenous folks in the region.
