I think it's pretty easy to get caught up in the superficial 'people know me as the person that does XYZ' but if that's the angle they get it's the angle they know. My closest friends couldn't tell you my favourite class or character in a game I've spent hours on because I never got asked or told.

Making conversation with someone about their own interests usually opens those kinds of opportunities to discuss these things, not only to learn about them but talking about yourself too. I can only say what I know about you based on what I talked about myself first lmao

I think it doesn't help much that most of the time you're interacting with someone at an event, the subject is going to be the happenings at the event. If the only time you talk to someone is whilst playing X game, its a lot harder to glean something like their favourite book.
