The ultimate goal is: give everyone what they need to flourish as a human being. No system will ever be able to do that perfectly, but it’s what we should be designing our laws and our institutions to do.

Newsom is betraying such a fundamental misunderstanding of what motivates the progressive left. The goal isn’t to force people to adopt any particular identity; it’s to give every person a baseline level of dignity, protection, affirmation, and support.

Seriously though, how inspired is it that Luke had been shown the “ways of the Force” mainly through physicality and combat, only for the Force-iest moment of all to come when he decides not to fight and instead to spare Vader’s life. 13/10, just perfect.

For all that it gets pretty silly at times, Return of the Jedi has what might be the greatest, bravest, most creatively inspired moment in all: Luke showing Vader mercy and throwing away his lightsaber.

It’s not just the eight senators who backed the deal. It’s the whole caucus! The vote-swapping is obvious. They’re all in on it. The question should be: “If you agree that Dems should keep fighting, then you’ll move to oust your leadership, right?”

It’s kayfabe! Just as likely (if not more) that he wants the deal but worried about getting primaried, so he whipped another Dem senator to vote for the deal.
