A new Grimm appears, and Bronn and Emerald uncover a new horror in the war with Salem
His companion from Atlas Academy lay mired in the Grimm’s insides, some white melted substance covering her left eye. The right one fluttered open, and struggled to focus. She finally locked onto Bronn’s face, piercing him with her silver gaze. “Bronn…” she muttered weakly. “You made it.” “Nyx, I-“ “Stop. It’s weak now, but it’s regenerating,” Nyx said. “You have to kill me to stop it.” “No, I can’t!” “You have to. I can’t fight anymore. K…. Killllll…” Her eye became unfocused again, and her speech slurred. The white mass over her left eye began pulsing rhythmically. “Killlll…. Meee….” “Nyx!” Bronn shouted, but a single gunshot silenced him. He looked up, and saw Emerald aiming one of her guns at Nyx. Emerald fired again, and again, and a fourth time, tears streaming down her face. When she had finally finished, she sank to her knees. The Grimm began to disintegrate, no longer able to survive without Nyx serving as its host. Bronn sat down heavily in the sand, then fell backward, staring up at the sky, his mind racing with what he had just seen. How could Nyx have been alive? How was she transformed into a Grimm? How many other people from his team had survived? From Mantle, from Atlas?

Serah awoke, freed from the constraints of Valin’s machine. She felt dizzy, sore, and somehow… empty. It was the emptiness that bothered her the most. She began to reach out, to try to sense what she could about this place, but nothing came to her. She looked around, spotted Armin and the girl Adira. The Thyferran knelt beside their enemy, who appeared badly hurt. His back was to Serah, and she approached them slowly. Despite seeing the two of them in front of her, Serah still couldn’t feel them there. The open hostility she got from Adira previously was gone, as was the calming familiarity of Armin’s presence. That was when she realized what happened. I can’t connect to the Force anymore.

Bronn managed to bring his shield up in time to block the Ravager’s talons, hearing a sharp clang as the batlike Grimm was rebuffed. His shot pierced the creature’s neck; it squawked painfully as it disintegrated. “I’ve got an idea!” Emerald shouted. “How much am I gonna hate it?” Bronn asked. “About as much as I do. How much charge does your shield have?” Bronn made a quick check. “About 75 percent of max.” “That’ll work,” she said. “Get ready to launch me.” “Which direction?” Bronn asked. “Straight up,” she answered. “Now.” She ran toward him, as fast as the sand would allow, and jumped. Bronn held his shield steady, angling it for her to land. Once he felt the impact, he tilted the shield straight up, and activated the repulsor. It fired, launching Emerald high into the air, amidst the flock of Ravagers. She unhooked the locks on Thief’s Respite, freeing the bladed chains and slashing at the Grimm, slicing through several of them in one swing. One of the surviving Ravagers caught her arm, attempting to carry her off. Bronn quickly aimed, zeroing in with Lumina Crash, and fired a charged shot at the creature, shearing its wing off. It dropped Emerald, sending the illusionist in a free fall toward the desert floor. Bronn tossed his weapons aside – what Grimm were left were already in retreat – and centered himself under Emerald, catching her just before she impacted.

“Six, break to starboard!” an urgent voice cried out. She rolled instinctively, but not before the hiss of green laser fire stitched across her fighter’s nose. In the time it had taken her to deal with the bomber, the Interceptor had angled around for an attack on her and taken advantage of her weakened shields. Without Five’s warning, I’d be dead. She began pulling energy away from her blasters – they were nearly overheated anyway – and pushing them back into her shields. Slowly the percentage began to climb as she maneuvered away from the Interceptor. There was an explosion behind her, and the red dot that had been chasing her winked out - Five had gotten his kill. She waited for him to catch up and take point before angling on a new pair. Her astromech gave a panicked shriek - a Star Destroyer had just reverted to realspace behind them, blocking their exit vector. The ship, Subjugator, was a kilometer-long platform of guns carrying three squadrons of TIEs that would wreak havoc on the frigate and the squadron.

"Where'd you get off to for so long?" Armin asked. Adira flashed him a mischievous smile and simply said, "I had an appointment." "We weren't on Coruscant for that long," Armin replied, perplexed. "What appointment could you possibly have had?" "I wanted a tattoo," she said. "Something for me." Armin arched an eyebrow at her. She smiled and turned away as if she were going back to her room. She stopped, though, and looked over her shoulder at him as she unfastened her top, sliding it down around her shoulders. As the cloth revealed her pale skin, it also revealed a dark marking in a shape that Armin recognized almost immediately: a Thyferran lotus. "Adi, is that...?" She smiled and nodded. "But why?" "Well, I said it was for me, but really it's for you," she said. "To let you know that I belong to you." ----------

Emerald’s back bumped into the wall as the men advanced on her. She reached behind her, feeling for the comforting grips of Thief’s Respite, but resisted the urge to draw. “Go ahead,” the ringleader said. “Nothing would give us more pleasure than to pay you back for everything you did.” “Look, fellas, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she started. “Yes you do. You were there at Beacon, during the Vytal Festival. We know you and your partner started the whole mess,” one of the others said. “People died there. Lost their homes.” “You don’t belong here,” the ringleader cut in again. “I’m giving you this chance to walk away. If you don’t, you’re not gonna make it out of here alive.” “Is there a problem here?” a voice said from the doorway. Emerald winced inwardly. Why did he have to be here? The men turned to look at Bronn, standing in the doorway, cutting an imposing figure with his shield and axe. “This don’t concern you,” the ringleader said. “This is between us and this traitor.”

“The reason I called you all here,” Robyn said, “is to discuss the formation of a new task force here in Vacuo. Back in Mantle, we already had the Happy Huntresses helping to take care of our citizens, but now that we’re here, it’s obvious that even they aren’t enough to cover everything. With all of us crowded in one place, pushing in on Vacuo’s citizens, quarters are tight and nerves are frayed. That’s the perfect atmosphere to attract Grimm, and we’ll need to mobilize every Huntsman we can to help fend them off. Even still, some Grimm might get past them and wreak havoc. So, starting today, I’m planning to debut a new force: the Disaster Corps.” There was a good deal of murmuring, and a smattering of applause. Robyn continued, “The primary goal of the Disaster Corps will be emergency response in the wake of Grimm attacks. Eliminating stragglers, search and rescue, and reconstruction of damaged portions of the city.” Bronn nodded as he listened to her speech. It made sense, and the fact of the matter was, it would give the refugees from Mantle and Atlas somewhere to focus their efforts, so that they weren’t just dead weight. “Ultimately, the corps will be made up of civilians, but Huntsmen and Huntresses are also encouraged to volunteer. They’ll be a critical line of defense for the city. If you’re going to volunteer, see me or Fiona,” Robyn concluded. Beside her, the sheep-like Faunus meekly waved, with a notepad in her hand, presumably to record names of volunteers.

Bronn gave her a tight smile. “Sorry, didn’t mean to bother you,” he answered. “Just thought that since we’re assigned to the same team and all, we could spend a little time getting to know one another.” “There’s nothing about me you need to know,” Emerald said, bristling. “And nothing about you I care to find out. What, are you some poor Atlesian orphan looking for a little comfort in this trying time?” “Mantle, and my mother’s still alive, thanks,” Bronn answered. “Anything else you want to be reductive about, or is the arrogance just for show?” “Sorry,” Emerald said, slightly abashed. “You just came across as…” “No, I get it. You’ve dealt with one too many jerks in your life so now that’s all you see,” Bronn replied. Shrugging, he added, “I’m not a teenager, though. I’m here to do a job. This line of work, that means learning about your partner. What they’re capable of, what their limits are. Whether they’ll have your back when it really comes down to it.”

He took a deep breath, seeming to steel himself against the tide of memories into which he was about to wade. “Sijda was… well, she was a complicated person,” Armin began. “She’d led a pretty hard life. Orphaned, put into slavery by the Empire, ended up on Despayre. She managed to break free, escaped with another prisoner named Rianna Saren, and went rogue for a while. Got mixed up with a guy, Mal Rencorn. He was… I guess he was the first guy she actually loved. Probably the only one, who knows. “Anyway, the two went on the run from the Empire, but he got caught. Tortured, pumped for information he didn’t have. Then he died,” Armin said, frowning. “I… I was the one. I did it. I don’t think Sijda ever forgave me for it.” Serah’s eyes widened in shock. “You…?”
