- Last but not least, in spite of the most challenging parts of this year, I was able to make it through with clarity about what I want for the future, more self-respect, and the ability to stay positive and hopeful. Looking forward to what the rest of the year will bring!

- And two days ago, my older sister Brittany got married, and I put in lots of work to help make it the best day ever - and it was!

This year, I was able to do nice things for my friends and family that made their lives just a little bit better, like planning a party for my brother-in-law and taking my sister to an amazing concert.

- At 32-years-young, I finally purchased my first ever vehicle, and rapidly improved my confidence in driving, enough so that I can comfortably travel from Toronto to see my family in Peterborough. (This also means that I accomplished my New Year’s Resolution!)

- After getting turned down for a major (but highly competitive) award, I was able to quickly find additional TA/RA work and so I thankfully do not have to panic about money for at least the short-term future

- After struggling with it for half a year longer than expected, I finally finished a first draft of my second dissertation chapter, and I feel optimistic that the writing for the third chapter will go even faster. Right now, my motivation to write is at an all-time high.

- In June, I presented at the Mechademia conference in Kyoto, at the Kyoto International Manga Museum (the same place my profile picture was drawn!). I ended up getting 20 extra minutes for Q&A and we used it all for a great conversation. It was wonderful to see old friends and to make new ones.

- This year, I was able to teach my self-designed anime course in the summer for the second time. I was delighted and honored that my department thought it was worth bringing back, and I had an incredible group of students that impressed me so much.

- This year, I gave a one-hour public talk at the Centre for Culture and Technology on my dissertation research. It was the biggest presentation I have ever given. It was really well-received and gave me so much more confidence in my work.
