Actual recent experience: if your car’s stolen the Met will tell you they can review *up to* 20 mins of CCTV – but only if they’re given the exact 20 min span of time in which the car was stolen.

Grannies protesting genocide though? Call in the lads from the shires, there’s real work to be done

Love living in the asboification era of British high politics

Good piece, important that someone continues to beat this drum, thanks

Yeah I can think of one, uhhh, notably more intense and arguably more impactful episode of willful disinformation from a significantly broader cross-section of the British press

Everything’s computer 😔

Ah, got it, ty. I don't think Bruenig is advocating a coalition, though. Her point is that the substantive concern the far right hijacks and feeds off of is real, and that leftist policies addressing the original concern would both 1) be good on the merits and 2) take the wind out of the fash sail

Sorry, not sure I follow

It’s a pretty benign article. Basically does a rundown of the ways in which many speakers at this event were weird and hateful; briefly notes the left’s absence; says they should start putting forward pro-child policies more forcefully; outlines a few of them. All pretty uncontroversial stuff.

Oh wow, I missed that the 400m fire safety rule went away, that’s great news!

… is it possible that Alstom, in a rush to get the TGV M ready for ‘24 (lol), delayed any planning for the additional power needs that a longer train might have? SNCF’s order volumes and urgency was much greater than any potential cross-channel demand; easy to imagine them just ignoring the latter
March 16, 2025 at 2:46 PM
Rampant and vastly underinformed speculation on my part, but: based on (1) the Horizon power cars being more compact and (2) the e300’s need for additional, half-powered pax cars at either end of the set (which still resulted in the lowest power-to-weight ratio of that gen of TGVs) …

Electric buses that don’t need to sit around at a charger, weigh significantly less than a battery bus, and have lower lifetime maintenance cost than most if not all other modes of propulsion? Sign me up

Also, anecdotally, they’re quiet, comfy, and even fun to ride

Not the biggest fan of the ETR 1000s, but they're comfortable enough imo. Doesn't mean you're wrong: an ever so slightly roomier but less capacious train would make tons of sense and would be adored by the public (so of course it's not going to be done)
February 26, 2025 at 7:14 PM
Assuming it's a UK-ified ETR 1000, six standard class coaches (2+2), and one first class coach (1+2) would yield 530 seats. Add a cafe car, trim a few seats due to UK loading gauge, and you've got their figure.

To most journalists it just becomes another inherently unverifiable iteration in a “he said, she said” cycle. If you’re not going to scrutinize all factual claims in political discourse (which most of the press hasn’t for decades), you’re obv not going to do basic arithmetic either
February 26, 2025 at 1:18 PM
My read is that widespread (and self-aware!) innumeracy among the journalist/chattering class means anyone who portrays themself as a “numbers guy” confidently enough basically gets carte blanche to put whatever numbers they want out there

It’s honestly not even that bad! All the headlines made me dread checking but turns out we can hoot and holler with not-even-entirely-reckless abandon
