I have shown Egon Schiele's work below. Tragically, he died aged 28 from Spanish flu. Just 3 days after his pregnant wife, Edith, had died of the same thing. A gifted artist, Austrian painter.

Riders on the Beach. Paul Gaugin, 1902. Folkwan Museum, Essen, Germany. Taken from a scene in Hova- oa, a Marquesas island near Tahiti. The artist, already seriously ill, had arrived there in 1901. The colouring is fascinating.

Madame Moitessier. 1856. Jean-Auguste-Dominque Ingres. National Gallery, London. Representing the wealthy of the Second Empire, it was commissioned in 1844. It was not completed for 12 years.

Jean-Auguste-Dominque Ingres. b.1780 d.1867. French painter and draughtsman. In the salon of 1806, his portrait of Napoleon 1 on the Imperial Throne created a stir and he received adverse criticism most of his life. In 1825, he was elected to the Academy. Later, becoming a Senator.

Swinging. 1925. Wassily Kandinsky. This painting looks as fresh in terms of expression, as when it was made. Kandinsky expresses the notion of swinging by simple forms of colours and objects.

Wassily Kandinsky. b.1866 d.1944. Russian painter and art theorist. One of the original abstraction artists, he was born in Moscow.

The Blue House. Maurice de Vlaminck. 1906. Of the three founders of Fauvism, Vlaminck combined his flamboyant use of brilliant colours and love of the landscape to a greater extent.

Maurice de Vlaminck. b.1876 d.1958. Painter born in Paris of Flemish parents. Untrained, he only referenced Van Gogh for inspiration. His work was in the style of Fauvism. More savage in his rendering than his contemporaries, he believed instinct and heart were at the core of his work.

Woman with a hat. Henri Matisse. 1905. The style was called Fauvism, taken from the term les fauves, meaning wild beasts. It lasted from 1905 to 1908. Abstract and bold, it moved away from the softer colours of impressionism.

Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. 1907. Pablo Picasso. Museum of Modern Art. New York. It portrays five women in a brothel. This new depiction revolutionised European painting and heralded the birth of Cubism.

Pablo Picasso. b. 1881 Spain. d.1973 France. Multi talented, he was a painter, sculptor, printmaking, ceramicist, and theatre designer. His artistic genius had a huge impact on modern and contemporary art.

The Balcony. Edward Manet. 1868. Exhibited at the 1868 Paris Salon. He kept it until his death. It was sold to Gustave Caillbotte in 1884. The four figures - sitting, Berthe Morisot. Centre, Jean Baptiste Antoine Guillemet. Right, Fanny Claus and Leon Leenhoff, his son, obscured at the back.

Edward Manet. b.1832 d.Edward 1883. A French painter who broke new ground by depicting events in his own day rather than looking back to the past. Inspiring the Impressionist group, his work was initially greeted by hostility by the established art salon of the time.

The Lady of Shalott. 1888. John William Waterhouse. Tate Britain. It is a visual explanation of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's 1832 of the same name. The style is very much reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which operated some years before.

The Floor Scrapers. 1875. Musee doorway, Paris. The picture depicts three semi nude workers in a Parisian apartment. It was unusual in that the working class was usually portrayed working in the fields. Tonally, Caillbotte keeps the painting fairly mute in colour.

Gustave Caillbotte. A French painter. b.1848 d.1894. Born in Paris, he was a member and founder of the Impressionist movement. Although his work is seen as more realistic than other members.

This is probably one of Pissarro's most recognisable works and later on in his career. The Boulevard Monmartre, on a Winter's Morning. 1897. It's one of a series of views he did of Paris at that time.

My first post had to be Camille Pissarro. b.1830 d.1903. Born in the US Virgin Isles. A painter and printmaking, he was a key figure in the forming of impressionism and neo-impressionism. A kind and warm-hearted man. He became like a father to several artists, sharing and encouraging their work.
