Robert Reich shows how capitalism has become so destructive for any sense of the common good. We need guardrails and we need to put them on as fast as possible.

Only spiritual understanding can provide a way forward - not one based on judgment, greed and small-mindedness of me and mine but the heart woke to the suffering of all.

Every so often, especially during economic downturns, racism pokes its ugly head. At present, ultra-right and fascist groups, spurred by 'populist' rhetoric by Trump and similar politicians, have emboldened racists. Still when we stand united, racism, like all lies and hatreds, in time will recede.

Australian Assistant Minister for Multiculturalism Julian Hill recognized his response and indicated that such racism has no place in Australia. Daljit on X simply posted 'ONE LOVE ❤️' and 'Thank you' to Minister Hill.

The last 30 days have often felt more like summer than Fall in southern Ontario. Rain has mostly been missing too. Certainly uncanny but enjoying going outdoors.

Development that destroys a public treasure that generations would enjoy is never progress. We need to elect politicians who start thinking again of the public good and not what makes developers profit at any cost. Development needs to be measured in human terms not just monetary profit.

This image of a mother holding her starving child is a poignant image of children and families suffering in Gaza.

Aid needs to flow freely and must never be blocked by any nation or power. The lives of all children matter and conflict must never make us forget our responsibility to protect them.

Let's put science and evidence into these discussions. Most scientists (97%) agree on human-caused climate change. Recent studies, such as by Cornell University's ScienceAlert, have found 99.9% of scientific papers agreeing on it but the public due to disinformation thinks there's a gap.

Right-wing politicians will call citing science behind climate change politicizing a crisis such as wildfires. Media and social media controlled by this ideology also denies the reality. Instead conspiracy theories are peddled, such as governments seeding clouds or crazed arsonists setting fires.

Alberta separatist threats may soon fizzle out even if Carney wins, not because Danielle Smith will put Canadian unity first. If the oil slump continues due to increased output by Saudi Arabia and OPEC+, and prolonged US-China trade war under Trump. Alberta will be forced to shift priorities.

Early Sikhs settled in the Lower Mainland, BC often facing racism. As India was a British colony, Sikhs could not be directly barred from migrating to Canada. So Direct Passage Voyage ordinance was enacted to bar them. This colour bar was challenged during the brave but sad Komagatu Maru journey.

First recorded person of Sikh ancestry in Canada was Prince Victor Duleep Singh, son of Maharajah Ranjit Singh, posted in Halifax in 1888. The first Sikh settler in Canada was Kesur Singh, Risaldar-Major with British Indian Army. He came to Canada during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

April is Sikh Heritage Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the contributions of Sikh Canadians with the month-long celebration.

April is also an important month for the Sikh community as it includes Vaisakhi, which marks the creation of the Khalsa and the Sikh articles of faith.

Mark Carney and Trump spoke on Friday and the conversation was described as productive. Since their phone call, Trump has stopped talking about Canada as 51st State or calling the PM a Governor. If true, then Carney skillfully reached Trump and convinced him to exempt Canada from tariffs.
April 2, 2025 at 9:33 PM
According to CNN Canada and Mexico as partners of the Canada US Mexico Agreement (CUSMA Free Trade Agreement) are exempt from tariffs, even baseline 10%, on all CUSMA compliant goods.

If this is the case, the impact of tariffs on Canada (and Mexico) would be minimal.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will use taxpayer money for a speaking engagement with alt-right Ben Shapiro, who has expressed support for annexation of Canada. Sad when political ideology trumps loyalty to your country and its people.

While Pierre Pollievre (PP) talks about 'Making Canada Great,' he's in ideology the same as Trump, just a mini version. PP has to pretend he will stand up for Canada but when Peterson does promo videos for him and Musk endorses him, then PP's real is revealed agenda: To sell out Canada.

The idea that Spanish and Mexicans are foreigners in lands that were once theirs is a major distortion of history, even place names bear witness to this history (along with earlier Indigenous presence). The need to erase this history shows deceit (mostly a lie told as part of a national myth).

I fully agree that Canada needs to deepen trade and cultural relationships with Mexico, since both countries share similar interests. A deepening relationship will also lead to less of America-centric understanding of North America and exclusive reliance on the US.

Really sad images. Even people who have been in the US 10+ years, who worked hard to build a better life for themselves and their kids were put in shackles and on military planes, as if they were dangerous criminals. The worst part is the indignity and disrespect shown to them.
