It’s ridiculous to think it’s a better idea to fail with :05 remaining with a 0% chance of overcoming that.

If you fail at the last second conversion, you don’t have to worry about field position or onside kicks because you put it all on the conversion and failed and wish you’d known that was going to happen sooner.

Same is true if you fail at the last moment. At least if you find out sooner, you have a small chance to fix it. Waiting just puts all your eggs in the conversion basket. Going early keeps one egg for onside kick shenanigans.

At least now if you get the onside or a quick stop you know how to plan for needing a second score. Your way, it’s too late to adjust. You assumed you’d convert the conversion and lost because you didn’t find out you were wrong sooner.
