A chiton (Placiphorella stimpsoni), known to prey on small animals, was observed during today’s intertidal sampling.

It is a Japanese flounder found in the sea around the Center. It shows perfect mimicry on the sandy-mud substrate.

Two green sea urchins shot a while back near the Center. Their coloration is normally greenish-gray dorsally, but occasionally, individuals with paler coloration are observed.

Some large tracks were found in the snow, which might belong to a Japanese red fox.

Since the sea was finally calm, we went to the shore near the Center today. We observed many aeolid sea slugs that were feeding on hydrozoans attached to the rocks.

These are three small sea squirts attached to a bivalve (Chlamys farreri nipponensis). It was shot a while back around Hadakajima.

We conducted oceanographic monitoring from our research vessel today and spotted some whales in the bay.

Today, technical staff at the Center cleared snow from our research vessel and the boathouse. Although the boathouse is roofed, a lot of snow had accumulated on the vessel.

Several groups of Brant Geese were observed around the Center. On that day, they were feeding on seaweed at the base of the seawall.
