📊 Our results show that the effect of rent increases on voting is structured along the left–right dimension. Right-wing parties gain in wealthy areas as rents rise, whereas left-wing parties benefit in poorer areas, where rent increases are felt as a stronger burden.

🔍 To this end, we focus on Madrid, Spain’s capital and one of the municipalities where access to housing has become a major public concern. We rely on fine-grained data at the census-tract level, covering more than 2,000 neighbourhoods.

🤔 We start with a problem (access to housing) that, unfortunately, has been gaining prominence in Spanish public opinion. In fact, last September, the CIS barometer showed that 33% of those surveyed considered housing to be one of Spain's main problems.

Using data from 27,000 urban census tracts, we find that:
🏙️ Population growth → higher support for PRR
💸 This effect is strongest in low-income & high-unemployment areas.
🔍 Urban left-behindness matters too. PRR success is fuelled by both rural decline and ...urban sprawl!
