I finally dropped a stack of books on the local bookcrossing shelf, a year later than anticipated.

I came back with a small hardcover book, The Nature of Poetry (1946).

The basic framework proposed in this book remains relevant today, albeit with some marginal […]

Jerusalem doctor Meir Antopolsky told that recently, one elderly patient of his grumbled after listening to the medical recommendations: “Oh, I visited another Russian doctor once, He also suggested I quit smoking”.

It was Jewish poet Shaul Tchernichovsky (he died in 1943).

Polina Barskova, poet and researcher of the cultural life during the Siege of Leningrad, once told that she was giving a lesson to her students in some old bookstore in Amherst. After the lecture, the owner came to her: “There was another Russian here once. He used to fall from his chair all the […]

I'm keeping reading Shklovsky. This paragraph is not that funny for a non-Russian ear, but it reminded me of two great anecdotes I want to share. (01/03)

Yesterday, I was reading Shklovsky and stumbled upon this unexpectedly chilling short text. I translated it for you (although I just googled that the book itself *is* available in English, if you decide to read it from start to finish).

THIRD CANDLE
as
we
were
trying
to hold
on

were
we
alive

grasping

pitiful
memory of self
it's pitfalls

moist golden dirt
as the desert winter
reigns and everything's

blooming

and the electric candle
of the recollection is dimming

as the distant scream
touches you

in a flicker
