Sure. He doesn't say they are necessarily the same. He says if one of them is innocent they are both innocent. But we know he is guilty already.

Terry is guilty. If adam was innocent terry would be innocent. But Terry isn't innocent. So adam can't be innocent.

I might be tired and making leaps, but I don't think it does require the inverse. A guilty person says "if he is innocent than so am I". We know the speaker is guilty. Therefore the person he's speaking about must also be guilty because if they were innocent the speaker would be innocent, right?
