I tend to conceptualize mechanics as a combination of "here is a tool" and "here is a mindset."

The improv tip of 'yes, and' is a great example because it's a literal tool (start by saying these words), as well as a reminder to hold a collaborative, generative mindset.

My personal GM and player style is informed by my training as an improv & stage actor and my past profession as a drama therapist.

I try to reflect that style in my mutual support mechanics, to hopefully create replicable techniques and approaches for a playful environment of reversible authority.

I've also been thinking about this issue a lot in designing Abyssal (FitD historical monster game in production w/ @evilhat.bsky.social) because play-to-find-out in a big historical setting with player-driven narrative can be daunting...!

My duet games are written with this explicitly in mind, too! Because they are collaborative narrative building with a very minimal structural arc to guide the story, I intentionally create two kinds of scaffolding: providing support for oneself, and providing support for one's play partner.
