Computer guy. Databases. Code. First language: Microsoft Basic on a TRS-80 Model III. Most recent language: C#. In between: PowerShell, Transact-SQL, C, other dialects of Basic, Pascal, FORTRAN, HPL, Windows batch, bash, PL-1, COBOL and (probably) others
I keep bouncing between SSMS, VS, VS Code & ADS. Between remembering what has which feature, keeping settings in sync, a seemingly growing list of installed extensions, correcting my finger-muscle memory (re: key shortcuts) and something updating every day, I’m almost ready to back to vi. Or ISPF.

If it wasn't for brown fields, I have no fields.

Next:
• I learned about "git clean", which I had never used before.
I moved some report processing from my development workstation to a shared server.
I watched some things on YouTube, including EF stuff, Data API stuff and trying to get my head around what Microsoft is selling with Aspire

Next:
• I continued looking for problematic email configuration and code, in support of a upcoming migration.
• I revised my system to track changes to published application configurations

What did I do last week?
• I published final (for now) changes to a tool, written in C#
• I published a different tool, written in C#, to production
• I worked on my "publish windows services" project, written in PowerShell.

And meetings. Plenty of meetings.

I've been watching "Master Design Patterns & SOLID Principles in C#" (youtu.be/rylaiB2uH2A?...), about 30 minutes a day, to try to improve my C# game.

I made some small data fixes in some #SQL databases.
November 16, 2024 at 9:12 PM
I reconfigured the email system on my SQL Servers to support a forthcoming migration. The next day I had to fix my #dbachecks configuration because I forgot that it checks SQL Database Mail Profile names.

I dug through a Transact-SQL stored procedure to make sure it was doing a thing I thought it was. It was, so that was a happy ending.
November 16, 2024 at 9:11 PM
I dug through old, strange C# code and app.config files to find email addresses that will be changing before the end of the year. Related: I wrote a small C# console app to test our email system.

I also updated all of its' dependencies to something I can live with. This is my second C# application to make it to production, so it has as special place in my heart.

I updated a C# console app to be more verbose when I need it to be. (Two weeks ago I added functionality to update data in a SQL database.) The moral of the story is that you can't rely on log4net to do everything for everyone-even if it works for me.

I want to be more successful here than on Mastodon or even at the other place. So...let's try a simple "What I did last week" post and see how it goes.

I find the days I spend coding in #powershell, #transact-sql or #csharp are the ones that go fastest.
November 14, 2024 at 1:04 AM
I am primarily interested in #powershell, #sqlserver, #csharp and #softwareengineering. But I'm also interested in #linux, #podman, #devops, #proxmox, #postgresql and old school hardware.

#Lemmy and #Mastodon don't seem to have worked out so well, but I can't say that I tried very hard. I'm down to try the new hotness.
