AMS update: The role of the AMS Executive Director has changed somewhat since the start of the present ED’s tenure (beginning on 28 October 2019, as interim). Some of this is to be expected. However, the recent elevation of the ED from ex officio 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 to ex officio 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳 of the Board—thus granting the ED access to a seat on the Executive Committee, which is utilized for urgent operation of the Society—is of particular interest in our current crisis. What constitutes an urgency/emergency, and who determines this? What about long-term urgent conditions, such as a pandemic or the death of a previous ED? Most importantly, what happens to checks and balances when the ED, an appointed (not elected) administrative employee, is granted special authority indefinitely? Two new documents (linked below) on the Accountability Archive site delineate some important recent changes. Here's the #AMS petition, which outlines the problems in the Program, Ethics, and Accessibility committees (with links to testimonial accounts). It is calling for transparency. 412 current and former members have signed, against membership of 2508 (as of Nov 2023). docs.google.com/document/d/1...
