🏝️ On sabbatical. Formerly known for diving under the hood of design systems, fixing your Figma library, standing up for softies. My ex's include Duolingo, GitHub, and Postman (the API tool). 🦸🏻‍♂️🇰🇷🏳️‍⚧️🫶🏽
In other news, I haven't opened Figma for 11 months. Today I did & wow, I felt like I hadn't used the tool in years. So many new features (& marketing pop ups 🤮)! It was frustrating to figure out how to do any of the old things. Eventually I started getting my rhythm back but wow, why so hard?

I don't normally share design-y opinions. But I like thinking about it in the comfort of my home and with a few peers. So sharing to the great internet abyss is new for me. I took the leap because I resonated with what I read and I hope it encourages a gentle discussion.(6/6)...6 😈

I think the idea of bridging the gap between design and development sounds like an endless crusade. Instead, I agree with Rune, I want to make some mess, find where I can pull, push, bend, & get a little out of the box. I want conversation around the work, not to feel like silos in a team relay(5/6)

"It might feel convenient at first, but it comes at a cost."
The designer who asked for help is phenomenal and by no means lacked any skills. The files they needed to navigate were so wrapped in auto layout that any potential change felt impossible without crashing everything. (4/6)

A great example that Rune brings up is auto layout and how frustrating it can be to navigate a file that's fully conformed to this feature. At GitHub I sat with a designer who asked if I could teach them more about Figma because they just couldn't understand another team member's file. (3/6)

It's a short read but as a systems designer who aims to make work, efficient, and fun with my peers I always feel a certain guilt for how my work can feel limiting to their creativity. At what point are the features enough and a regular human conversation can help us move our best work forward.(2/6)
