My memory might be fuzzy but I think the order of this is backwards. I feel like we were making jokes about how the only way to get a decent result was to google "<seqrch term> reddit" years before the chatbots showed up and google started to add it to search results.

And I appreciate a lot of folk see this as lazy! It reminds me a bit of when Wikipedia appeared - the info was often questionable but the convenience was too good to pass up.

I think this is an underappreciated reason some people find the chatbots appealing - finding information online has gotten increasingly frustrating. The calculation is "okay, maybe the information is only ~80% accurate, but I can use my judgement and maybe I'll get the info I need much quicker."

In this case the guy at the other end of my chatgpt sessions should be getting paid more because he is typing really fast and knowledgeable on a lot of stuff!

Yes I'm maybe just not following this discussion well enough, but it seems to me that the tech companies will hear "we did the same thing cheaper by a factor of X" and then jump to "so the Y billion we spent can now deliver us X times more value".
